So you’ve loaded up your new Mac with all the programs that you wanted to.

This is a Bonus Tip in our series “Mac OS X Snow Leopard – 15 Tips You Need To Know”.

Now what about those few programs that misbehave?

Not every program is created equally and when it comes to computers, there are so many different formats that it’s hard to find 1 program that will play well with them all.

So here are a few programs that can help relieve some potentially minor frustrations for you.

1st things first, Quicktime doesn’t play well with a lot of video formats (especially .wmv files).

There are a few programs that can help alleviate this problem.

Flip4Mac

Perian

VLC

Flip4Mac is a plug-in that works with Quicktime, converting .wmv files as you watch them.

Perian works in similar fashion but supports many more file types.

Finally you have VLC, which is a stand alone video player.

VLC is a great alternative to Quicktime and it supports just about every video file format out there, which means it’s a 1 stop shop for you.

So now that your video viewing problems are solved, we can move on to .zip and .rar files.

The built in Archive Utility in Mac OS X is alright but for heavy duty jobs your are going to want to grab UnRarX.

This is a great file compression program that should do the trick for all your file compression needs.

That should take care of the majority of your minor frustrations, if you had any in the first place that is.

Enjoy Mac OS X Leopard!

This is our 15th tip in our series “Mac OS X Snow Leopard – 15 Tips You Need To Know”.

…you still need a few things from your old friend Microsoft Windows.

Well running Windows on your Mac is very simple!

There are 2 different ways that you can run Windows on a Mac: virtualization and Boot Camp.

Lets look at virtualization first.

If you want to run Windows and Mac applications at the same time — without rebooting — you can install Windows using Windows virtualization software.

Parallels Desktop 5.0

VMware Fusion 3

Both of these programs allow you to run Windows on your Mac, but the advantage of these programs is that you can access both your Windows and Mac programs at the same time.

Boot Camp, on the other hand is a cheaper alternative (free with Mac OS X Leopard).

The main drawback of Boot Camp is that you must choose whether you want to run Windows or Mac OS X Leopard when you start your computer up.

So it’s really up to you and your budget, which route you want to go. But both are good quality.

You will need a legitimate copy of Microsoft Windows in order to run Windows on your Mac.

If you are experiencing any problems with running Windows on your Mac or you need any help with your Mac – feel free to visit www.YourComputerHelpDesk.com, contact us, or call us at (800) 573-0234.

This is our 14th tip in our series “Mac OS X Snow Leopard – 15 Tips You Need To Know”.

… you can’t get a virus.

I would like to let you know that this is NOT true!

It is very possible to get a virus on you Mac computer and companies do make Mac Virus Protection software.

While it’s true that there are not as many viruses for Apple computers as there are for Microsoft computers, they still exist.

So you should still take every precaution possible in order to protect yourself from getting a computer virus because the headaches and frustration that you will experience when you do get one can be avoided.

So here are a few anti virus programs that will protect you from those nasty viruses.

So you’ve got a handle on some of the programs that you…

This is our 13th tip in our series “Mac OS X Snow Leopard – 15 Tips You Need To Know”.

will be using most of the time, but what else comes with that shiny new operating system?

Well there are a few programs that you should know about, for everyday use:

Calculator

TextEdit

Stickies

Photo Booth

The calculator program allows users to perform simple, complex, and logical operations.

It has basic, programmer, and scientific modes and even allows you to print out all of your work.

Common conversions are also possible with this easy to use calculator.

TextEdit is just a simple word-processor that is comparable to notepad on a Windows computer.

It has the ability to

Check spelling and grammar

Create lists and tables

Insert graphics

You can even save your document in a number of formats, including Microsoft Word.

Stickies are just what they sounds like!

And boy do they come in handy. Instead of writing down something on a sticky note and wasting paper, you can just use your computer!

Make a list or just type out that number that you need really quick.

You can even change the color, font or size of the text.

Finally we have Photo Booth, which is a really neat program.

Photo Booth allows you to take pictures or videos using your Macs built in camera.

Now you know about some of the “everyday use” programs that your Mac comes with, so get started being more productive!

This is our 8th tip in our series “Mac OS X Snow Leopard – 15 Tips You Need To Know”.

Well when you get an Apple computer, these 3 programs work together to improve your computing experience.

Apple offers Mail (email), Address Book and iCal (calendar) to help you get things done with efficiency and accuracy.

Mail works with the most popular email standards of today as well as the most popular email services (Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, and AOL Mail).

You can even have multiple email accounts in Mail, so all of your emails are in one place!

Address Book gives you a place to store your contact information. You can

Import information from applications,

Create distribution lists, and

Print address labels and envelops.

Address Book even uses the vCard format, the most popular format for contact information today, so that you can send and receive vCards.

To load a vCard onto your Mac, simply click and the contact information stored in the card is automatically loaded into your contacts.

iCal allows you to create multiple calendars to separate your work and home life (for example).

You can even hide calendars to simplify viewing.

One of the extra neat things about iCal is that it allows you to create events. You can then use your Address Book to send emails to your guest list and it will keep track of attendee responses. If you get an invitation it will automatically be added to your iCal.

These 3 programs are fully integrated into one another to help you get stuff done faster and easier than you could ever imagine.

If you are experiencing any problems iCal, Mail, or Address Book or you need any help with your Mac – feel free to visit www.YourComputerHelpDesk.com, contact us, or call us at (800) 573-0234.
